BOSTON, MASS. – The Providence College cross country teams competed at the Boston College Battle-in-Beantown Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22. The women claimed the team title in the featured women’s 5,000 meters while the men finished seventh in the featured men’s 8,000 meters.

The Providence women showed their dominance early in the race. Graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) and senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) were all part of the lead pack a mile into the 5,000-meter affair. As the field began to break apart, Rocha, Ilarda, and Wheeler all remained as part of the lead group. Coming out of the Wilderness, the trio made up the majority of the top seven. Rocha would kick home to finish in fourth overall with a time of 17:05, followed by Ilarda in fifth (17:14) and Wheeler in sixth (17:21). Paladino and senior Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) rounded out the top five for Providence. Paladino finished 18th (17:39) and Barry took 38th (18:04). The women won the team title with 71 points over Indiana (78 points) and Georgetown (78 points). This is the third season in a row that the women have claimed the team title and the fourth time in five years.

Senior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) highlighted the men’s 8,000-meter race for Providence with a 24th place finish. Both junior Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) and junior Michael O’Leary (St. James, N.Y.) had strong races as both moved up in the second half of the race to finish in 32nd and 35th place, respectively.

In the open race, freshman Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) finished third overall in a time of 15:52.

Providence will next race a “B” team at the New England Championships at Franklin Park on Saturday, Oct. 7. Providence’s top team will race at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13.
