Two Former Friars Selected For IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships

Julian Oakley ’16 and Harvey Dixon ’16 will race at the championships in Birmingham, England.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two former Friars were selected to compete for their respective countries at the IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships. The selections were announced on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Julian Oakley ’16 will race for New Zealand, while Harvey Dixon ’16 will race for Gibraltar. The championships will be held in Birmingham, England from March 2-4.

Oakley’s selection comes on the heels of a stellar indoor season, which has seen Oakley run personal bests in the mile and 3,000 meters. In December, Oakley ran a time of 7:44.34 in the 3,000 meters. The time is the second fastest indoor 3,000 meters in New Zealand history and fifth fastest in all conditions. Most recently, Oakley dropped his mile personal best to 3:55.10, eighth fastest all time for a New Zealand athlete. He will compete in the 3,000 meters at the IAAF Indoor Championships.

Dixon was selected to the Gibraltar team after setting national records in both the indoor 1,500 meters and indoor 800 meters this season. Dixon holds two indoor Gibraltar national records and one outdoor (1,500 meters). It is yet to be decided which event Dixon will race at the IAAF Championships.
